My journey at Beyondly has been somewhat unconventional. I didn’t begin with a clear vision of the role I wanted or a specific direction within the business. However, by proactively engaging in projects that piqued my interest, I discovered both what I enjoyed and what didn’t align with my strengths. I shared these insights with my line manager, and together, we set regular development goals to strengthen my skills in those areas. This approach helped me be well-prepared when new opportunities emerged
- Confidence – Confidence plays a vital role in my procurement responsibilities, particularly as I am regularly required to network, build professional relationships, and present complex data to various stakeholders. Being confident allows me to articulate procurement strategies clearly, advocate for the best options, and assertively drive negotiations forward. It also helps me instil trust and credibility when dealing with both internal and external parties.
- Attention to detail – In procurement, especially when dealing with recycling evidence and compliance, attention to detail is non-negotiable. Whether it’s scrutinising contracts, analysing data, or monitoring market trends, missing even the smallest detail could result in costly errors or missed opportunities. Taking the time to carefully review every aspect of a project ensures that all potential risks are mitigated, and decisions are data-driven. This skill helps me develop thorough procurement plans and consistently deliver quality results.
- Negotiation and communication skills – Effective negotiation skills is critical in my role, as it helps secure value for money while preserving strong supplier relationships. My ability to clearly convey both the business’s requirements and the supplier's capabilities enables me to navigate complex discussions, resolve conflicts, and reach mutually beneficial agreements. These skills are not only valuable when dealing with suppliers but also when providing the wider team with updates on the status of various schemes and the market factors influencing our decisions.
Working in various roles across different areas of the business has given me a broader perspective and a deeper appreciation for how each department operates. This experience has allowed me to adapt my communication style and approach to my responsibilities, ensuring I’m as effective as possible in my role. It also helped me fully embrace Beyondly's culture and provided a solid foundation of knowledge, boosting my confidence in tackling any future opportunities.
In procurement specifically, managing busy periods around regulatory deadlines has greatly enhanced my skills in organisation, time management, and task prioritisation. This exposure has allowed me to refine these competencies to a high level, ensuring I can meet the demands of the role efficiently.
Additionally, participating in negotiation discussions, analysing market data, attending on-site visits, and being involved in industry events have been instrumental in building my confidence. These experiences have sharpened my ability to communicate and foster strong relationships with stakeholders and key players within the industry.
My advice would be to stay curious and proactive. Don’t wait for opportunities to come to you—seek them out. Volunteer for projects that challenge you or align with your interests, even if they fall outside your comfort zone or current responsibilities. This will not only help you discover what you enjoy but also reveal areas where you need to grow. Building relationships with mentors or colleagues who can offer feedback and guidance is equally important. Finally, be patient with yourself; career development is a journey, and each experience, whether successful or not, is a valuable learning opportunity.
