I identified early on the areas of the business that I was interested in and passionate about and I expressed this to my line manager. Together, we set regular development goals for me to train and deepen my understanding of those areas. I also completed multiple training courses and obtained an external qualification via IEMA to support my development.
- Attention to detail: My attention to detail has significantly improved throughout my career due to the importance of accuracy and meeting legislative requirements in my job role. I have learned to thoroughly double-check my own work and also gained insights from double-checking others' work.
- Confidence: As part of my role, I am required to speak publicly at events and webinars, and confidently communicate with prospects and customers about our services while answering their queries. This has helped me grow my confidence.
- Leadership: I am part of the leadership team and oversee a number of services, manage a team, and lead internal environmental commitments, initiatives, and a business plan.
Being pushed outside my comfort zone! There have been many times when I’ve had to step up in situations that I would be nervous or worried about, but the more you do this the more you gain confidence in your abilities. It always helps to prepare as much as possible!
Handling high workloads and juggling different responsibilities. There have been numerous busy periods with competing deadlines that I have successfully navigated, which has contributed to the development of my organisational, time management, and prioritization skills.
Try to identify the areas you are passionate about and gain a deeper understanding of those areas, including how they work and what they involve. This will help you define where you want to focus your development and align any training or objectives in that direction. Speak to others within the business who have developed their career and changed job roles/moved teams to understand how they managed it and what they did to get there.
